Is Pet Insurance Worth It?

If you have a pet dog, cat, horse, rabbit, bird or other small animal you keep as a pet then the right level of pet insurance cover can protect you from high vet treatment costs if they fall ill, become sick or are injured in accident. If your pet is a dog, pet insurance can cover you if your dog attacks a third party or causes a car accident by running into the road too.

Because pet insurance is not compulsory in the UK, some pet owners decide to risk not covering their pet with any pet insurance cover. In this case the pet owner is responsible for all vet fees and costs of treatment if your pet becomes ill or is involved in an accident or attacks someone.

With some pets, diabates, heart problems or other long term lifetime illnesses require lifelong treatment and the treatment costs can run into several thousand pounds. Can you afford not to insure your pet if something like this happens?

A PERSONAL STORY
My brother Rob owns a Boxer dog called Basil. He had all the health checks and vaccinations done when he was a puppy but within 3 months of “coming home” Basil had developed a heart condition. Beacause of this Basil now requires daily prescription heart pills and will do so for the rest of his life. Basil is now 6 years old and like any Boxer dog, is still as crazy and playful as ever.

From beginning his heart pill treatment at the age of 5 months my brother has been spending £250 per month on heart pills for his dog, and has been doing so every month for the past five and a half years.

In total, Basil’s heart pills have cost £17,500 over this term. Thankfully my brother had the sense to get
Pet Plan Lifetime Pet Insurance cover, and he pays just over £15 per month for it. So in fact Basil’s heart condition has only cost my brother £990 in pet insurance premiums over the 5 and a hlaf years. That’s some difference from the £17,500 he’d of had to pay if he had no pet insurance cover at all!

Naturally, my brother recommends pet insurance cover for anyone who loves their pet and wants to ensure they are looked after, after all you never know whats going to happen in life and what could be just around the corner!
